Candidate Homework for Tuesday, Sept. 9th

So, after watching Joe Biden's speech on Thursday, and suffering through Sarah Palin's ENDLESS acceptance speech this weekend, I'd like you to post to the comments link the following analysis and comparison (as we discussed in class):

According to each candidate:

What is Barack Obama's "story?"

What is John McCain's "story?"

What is their definition of America?

How is this vision challenged, threatened and upheld?

Remember, use specific quotations from the "texts" you watched and be prepared to defend your assertions in class.

According to Joe Biden Barack Obama is the American Man. Obama fought to make health care available, and bring down the cost of health care. He passed a law to keep nuclear weapons out of terrorist hands. Obama will also cut taxes 95%. Sarah Palin on the other hand states that Barack Obama wants to raise income, payroll, death, and business taxes. Barack Obama will create five million jobs, and make college more affordable. He wants to free us from oil problems, and most importantly he wants to bring home the troops from Iraq.
In Sarah Palin's speech she tells us that McCain promises to use the power of VETO in defense of public interest. He also protected tax payers by vetoing wasteful spending. He will lay more pipelines, create nuclear plants, and create jobs with clean coal. Sarah Palin and John McCain both believe that America needs to be more independent and not so reliable on outside sources, which is why they are creating a forty billion dollar natural gas line.
Joe Biden believes that McCain is just another George Bush. He mocks McCain for many choices like, voting nineteen times against minimum wage, and wanting to give oil companies a four billion dollar tax break. Sarah mocks Barack for wanting to forfeit in Iraq. She believes that Barack Obama will make the government bigger, take more money from the people, and create more laws for the people of America to follow. Barack Obama is ready for change, but John McCain is ready to fight.

Joe Biden tells America that Obama is the “Great American Story.” He is educated and can do anything he desires but he has used his knowledge to help the people in need. Obama also helps keep nuclear weapons away and get care for the soldiers. Also Obama will make tax cuts, create jobs, and correct the energy problems. But according to Sarah Palin she has a different view on Obama. She criticizes him on how he goes through the country telling people in each community what they want to hear and constantly changes his ideas wherever he is. She also says that Obama has never gotten involved with laws and reforms to be passed accusing him of not being able to make changes. She accuses him of wanting to make more money for Congress through tax increases making the government bigger. In her speech she also states the “Obama uses change to promote his career, McCain uses his career to promote change.”

Sarah Palin characterizes McCain as a fighter who is strong, determined, and can face any challenge. He will uses vetoes to favor the public and is determined to accomplish energy independence so that we provide our own oil and gas to our nation and won’t have to depend on others. He will also create pipelines, nuclear plants, clean coal jobs, and start using more solar and wind energy. With McCain she believes we will move forward. Biden though believes McCain cannot provide any good change to America and calls him another Geroge Bush. Under the McCain Administration the economy will suffer and he will create four billion dollars in tax breaks for large corporations. Also McCain does not want to bring the troops home while Obama believes to let the people in Iraq correct their own issues. Under McCain Biden says that “that's not change that's more of the same.”

Palin’s definition of America is that everyone is one family and that everyone has an opportunity to make it in the U.S. Everyone contributes to society and in a time of need we can all pull through it together. Biden’s definition of America is “no one is better than you, everyone is equal, and everyone is equal to you.” To Biden everyone is equal and when you fall you need to get up together.

Both Joe Biden, and Sarah Palin, gave very strong and convincing speeches. Joe Biden believes that Sen. Obama is a "great man" who on his own made himself who he is today. He is an inspiration to America and he has the power and determination to change a bad situation in America. Sarah Palin on the other hand contradicts all of Obama's promise of change by saying, while in the senate Obama has not made one reform. She says Obama never uses the word victory about the war because he wants to give up on the war. She goes on by saying Obama only wants to make the government bigger, stronger, and raise taxes.
Sarah Palin said that John McCain, being a prisoner of war knows how to pull through a tough situation and that’s what he'll do for America he will pull us through these tough times. She says John McCain, knows how to meet a challenge and knows how tough fights are won. Palin uses John McCain’s career to promote him and change. Joe Biden on the other hand does not think so highly of John McCain. He says McCain has bad judgment on many of the key issues. Biden says McCain does not plan on changing the economy, energy, oil, jobs, healthcare, and the war. He said that George Bush left a battered country and McCain will do the same because he is in agreement with many of Bushes ideas.
Both Candidates had similar ideas of America. Biden said that America is equal to all other countries and its triumphs are based on others. He says that America has the power to change and to get back up. Palin believes that America will pull through and they will leave America better off than they found it.
I believe both VP candidates succeeded in their speeches and both are very strong candidates.

Both Biden and Palin have two very different views on each president nominee and what America stands for. According to Biden, Obama is the perfect example of the “American man and dream.” Obama is one who came from being and having nothing to someone who could be the next president of the United States, all by working hard and putting endless effort. Obama will give every person the chance to succeed by lowering taxes, creating more jobs, lowering oil prices, making college more affordable, and making health care available to all. However, according to Palin, Obama doesn’t have the experience McCain has and he doesn’t have a real plan. She says that Obama’s plan is to take the nations money and make the government bigger. He plans to leave Iraq when we are finally accomplishing something, not fight terrorism, and raise taxes. She believes that Obama will not fight for the nation but McCain will.
Palin believes that due to McCain's past experience with having to fight hard missions and challenges; he will be able to lead the nation through anything. He puts the nation first and will do anything to serve the nation the right way because he does everything with the public’s interest in mind. She says the Obama just talks but McCain talks and then does. In the eyes of Biden, McCain is just like Bush and if he is elected there will be no change in the government. The economy will stay the same and troops will remain in Iraq.

Both Biden and Palin had fantastic speeches. They both are very convincing and can speak really well. That is basically the main similarity between both of them. They mostly have differences that are very noticeable. They both spoke about different issues that concerned them and their partner in the election. Biden spoke alot about the equality of america and equal pay for women. Palin spoke alot about the war and how they must stay in the war. she feels that they have a chance and can see a victory. If they pull out of the war then we will never get that chance at the victory. Biden wants to remove the troops from Iraq, he feels it is not a good idea to be there. Biden also spoke about the American dream, if you fall you must get back up. Palin didnt get "dirty" when it came to speaking about her opponent, in fact she just spoke amazing words about her partner. She put McCain on a very high level. She spoke of his experiences and how they would help America. One sentence that stood out was when Palin said that politicians say that they are fighting for you, but there is only one man in the election that really did fight and that was mccain. Eventhough they both had great speeches their can only be one president and vice president.

In Gov. Sarah Palin's acceptance speech she referred to herself to a bulldog, but with lipstick, and thats exactly what she was to Sen Barack Obama. She described Sen. Obama as someone who "praises on the working class people when their listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when their not listening". Also, he hasn't passed a major law or reform not even in the state senate. Where Sen. Joe Biden refers Sen. Obama as "The Great American Story", telling us that he could've done anything, could have gone to wall street, but instead he went to the south side of Chicago and because of that families pay less taxes and "more people have moved from welfare, to the dignity of work." And with Sen. Barack Obama as president there will be change.
Even though Sen. Biden and Sen. McCain are good friends, Sen. Biden disagrees with the direction Sen. McCain wants to take this country. Throughout the speech every time Sen. Biden mentioned one of Sen. McCains plans for the upcoming four years, the crowd with him would chant "that's not change, it's more of the same". Spectators held signs saying, "McCain more of the same". Sarah Palin sees Sen. McCain as "a man who has come through much harder missions ...and knows how tough fights are won". She continues saying that he's going to Washington to serve to people not the media. Sen. McCain will lead us to energy independence. She reminds the audience of Sen. McCain's military record, and how he's the only candidate that has actually fought for this country, "in places where winning means survival and defeat means death"
Sarah Palin's definition of America is not matter what, we're gonna pull through this together and with John McCain as president. Joe Biden defines the American creed as "no one is better than you, everyone is your equal, and everyone is equal to you." And America is the place where anyone can make it if they just try hard enough, but that dream is "slipping away". With Brack Obama as president that dream will become true again, and when you're knocked down he'll see you up.

Barak Obama is defined by his running mate, Joe Biden, as the “American Dream”. Biden states that due to the numerous challenges Obama went through throughout his life and to achieve the honor of running for president, he can understand the challenges that America is going through. According to Biden, Obama is the epitome of change and through his choices he will fix the inconveniences America is going through, making “their lives the work of his life”. Obama has already improved health care in Illinois, cut the working family’s taxes, and passed a law to keep nuclear weapons of out terrorist’s hands. This, according to Biden, shows promise that Obama will be a good leader to our nation and will bring about necessary change. Palin however disagrees and feels that Obama does not have enough experience to lead America for he’s never had any real involvement in the government. According to Palin, Obama has not made any major reforms, he’s just written two memoirs, and therefore he lacks the responsibility needed to be in charge of a nation. Palin states that Obama changes what he stands for in front of different communities in order to gain their support and that is not a quality that America should want in a leader. She also states that Obama’s going to put a huge tax burden on America, increasing income taxes, payroll taxes, death taxes, and business taxes; making those who already suffer, suffer more.
Sara Palin depicts John McCain as a man of strength and courage. She assures America that he will use his powers, especially that of the veto for the public’s good. The team has already used a veto towards wasteful spending which saved half a billion dollars, has stopped a fuel tax on the state, and has set America towards energy independence by making a natural gas pipeline. Palin says that McCain has previously fought for America and will continue to fight for us and pull us through the difficult times. Biden feels the exact opposite of Palin, stating that McCain does not come hand in hand with a time of strength, but rather will lead his presidency just like Bush’s. He backs up his point by stating that McCain sided with Bush 95% of the time in the senate and felt that the economy during Bush’s presidency was one which progressed. John McCain desires to set $200 billion in new tax breaks for America without any relief for 100 million American families and voted nineteen times against raising the minimum wage. According to Biden- “That’s not change; that’s more of the same.”
Joe Biden described America through the stories that he told throughout his speech. The common element in all of them was that every time you get knocked down you must get back up and continue to fight. Through Biden’s eyes, America signifies equality, in that everyone is equal and every single person has the same opportunity to get back up from their hardships and succeed. Sara Palin sees America as one unit made out of all the contributions of individuals and the government. Palin also states that every person can achieve anything in America and that every person has endless opportunities.

Joe Biden refers to Barack Obama as the “American Dream”. He says that because Obama suffered so much throughout his life he will be able to connect and understand the people more. He knows what their going through and therefore will be able to help them. According to Biden, John Mccain will not be a fit president for the U.S because he never suffered financially etc. he won’t be able to relate to the people as much as Obama and therefore he won’t be able to help them out as much. Biden emphasizes “change” in his speech. That they will lower oil prices, taxes, the costs of schools. They will provide more jobs for people, and make equal pay for women. They believe that anyone who tries can succeed. They think that Mccain is a lot like George Bush and that if he gets elected their will be no change and he will keep the country in a recession.
On the other hand Sarah Palin says how Mccain is the only one with experience in fighting for our country. Just like he risked his life and fought for us before he will fight for us again and help us through our hardships. Mccain is true to America if he says he’ll do something he will try his hardest to accomplish it. She says how Mccain fights with deeds while Obama fights with words.

According to Joe Biden, Barack Obama is the "American Dream". He has what it takes for this country to get up! He said, Obama is not selfish but more of friend for all of us. Biden said that McCain is nothing but the "SAME". McCain "is not change, but the same". Obama is the "American Man". Biden believes that McCain is another George Bush; McCain will just make GW Bush's mess bigger. However, Sarah Palin has a opposite view about obama. She believes that Obama will not be the best route for America. She said that he will increase income, payroll, and investment taxes. She said that McCain is the man who has fought battle for survival, and he was in a position where he had defeated and acquired death. She said McCain will be the best for America. She views Obama as a blood sucker and McCain as a messenger from heaven to change our Future. She said that McCain promises to use the power of veto in defense of public's interest. McCain has also protected tax payers by vetoing wasteful spending and will do well for the people. I believe that Palin's speech was boring and Biden speech very attractive.

According to Sarah Palin, talks about helping familys with children who have special needs. She also talks about how McCain can pull through any situation. Joe Biden says that Obama is the American Dream. Biden talks about how McCain doesnt want to take the troops out of Iraq and how McCain doesnt want to fix the economy and environment. biden says that Obama will lower taxes and gas prices. Biden uses the word "change" numerous times to emphasize his point that Obama is a better candidate. Palin says that Obama may have written 2 books but he has not passed any laws. Biden says that what McCain wants isnt change, its the same thing we have now. Biden mentions that McCain agreed with Bush on almost every decision he made. Palin states that not once during the war in Iraq did Obama use the word victory. Both Palin and Biden give great speeches to show support for McCain and Obama.

Joe Biden calls Barack Obama the "American Man." He tells how Obama worked his way up, and after finishing college, went to Chicago. There he fought to give the people health care and helped people to get off of welfare. As a senator he passed a law that would help to keep nuclear weapons out if the hands of terrorists, and also moved Congress and the President to give wounded soldiers the care they deserved.
Biden's view of America is that of the hardworking middle class, and the American promise. He also believes that everyone is equal. Biden calls McCain his friend but he also criticizes McCain, saying that the changes he plans to make are not really change, just more of the same.
Sarah Palin says that McCain promises to use the power of the veto in defense of the public interest. She also states that McCain will help America to become less dependant on foreign oil, and that they plan to lay more pipelines and drill for oil. McCain also wants to move towards alternative sources of energy.
Palin believes that with McCain as our President, America will be able to pull through and overcome its problems. Palin says that Obama is going to make government bigger, take more of our money, give more orders from Washington, and reduce the strength of America. She also says Obama wants to "forfeit" in Iraq and raise taxes. Palin says that Obama uses change to promote his career, while McCain uses his career to promote change.

In Joe Biden’s speech, he describes Barak Obama as an “American dream”. He says Obama knows what he has to do, what he should to make the America better. Obama will increase the health care to help American’s health.
Obama will cut tax up to 95%, increase job opportunities, removes the troops from Iraq and remove the nuclear weapons from the soldiers. He will also invent a new kind of clean and cheap energy to help the society from the energy crisis. Obama will make changes unlike McCain is more of the same. And in Biden’s view, “America is no one is better than you, everyone is equal” and people have to back up together to help up our country.
In Sarah Palin’s long speech, she tells that McCain promises to use the power of VETO to help the society to secure the public interests. McCain will also make the America achieve the energy independence to lower down the high costs on energy. She says McCain will change our future and let us away from wars to reduce the danger.
McCain is true to America, if he promises something, he will try his hardest to achieve it. She believes McCain is the man America need for the rest of the four years. And she thinks every person is a family, every person has the same opportunity to contribute to the big family, the America.

According to Biden's speech, he believes that Obama represents and is the "American Dream." Barack Obama worked his way up. He was raised by a single mother who had to raise two children and send her children to school. Being the man who could have gone anywhere with his life, he chose to help people in Chicago losing their jobs. To him, it's more than just a paycheck, it's about dignity. To Biden, the definition of Obama's America is change and refer to McCain as "more of the same." He also says " We don't have to accept a situation we can not bear," referring to what Barack Obama's change will do for the country.

Accoring to Palin's speech, she believes that McCain is something similar to progress. John McCain is a man who fought for his country and nearly sacrificed everything. As a person who fought during the Vietnam war, he understands the meaning of duty to the United States. McCain has shown what he is capable of with his "deeds," but Obama has shown us nothing and continues to fight with words. McCain also took Obama's slogan of "change" and is using it against him.

Biden Points:

Obama:
• “Champ, when you get knocked down, get up. Get Up.”
• “Failure at some point in everyone’s life is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable”
• “No one is better than you. You are everyone’s equal, and everyone is equal to you.”
• “We learned the dignity of work, and we were told that anyone can make it if they try.”
• Obama worked his way up
• Could’ve done anything after college but chose to go to Chicago and helpt he families there.
• “We have the power to change it. That’s Barack Obama, and that’s what he will do for this country. He’ll change it.”
• Barack Obama will reform our tax code. He’ll cut taxes for 95 percent of the American people
• Making alternative energy, creating 5 million new jobs and finally freeing us from the grip of foreign oil
• He’ll invest in the next generation of teachers. He’ll make college more affordable.
• Bring down healthcare costs by $2500 for the typical family and deliver healthcare for all Americans.
• Put more cops on the streets and put the “security” back in Social Security and never give up until we achieve equal pay for women.

McCain:
• Questions Americans never thought they would have to ask are being asked and that’s the America that George Bush left us, and the future John McCain will give us.
• “Middle-class people who worked hard and played by the rules on the promise that their tomorrows would be better than their yesterdays.” The promise is in jeopardy. Everyone knows it except for McCain.
• John thinks that during the Bush years “we’ve made great progress economically.”
• In the Senate, John sided with President Bush 95 percent of the time.
• When John McCain proposes $200 billion in new tax breaks for corporate America, $1 billion alone for just eight of the largest companies, but no relief for 100 million American families, that’s not change, that’s more of the same.
• As oil companies post the biggest profits in history, he wants to give them another $4 billion in tax breaks. But he voted time and again against incentives for renewable energy: solar, wind, biofuels.
• Millions of jobs have left our shores, yet John continues to support tax breaks for corporations that send them there.
• He voted 19 times against raising the minimum wage.
• He will continue to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq when Iraq is sitting on a surplus of nearly $80 billion
• THAT’S NOT CHANGE, THAT’S MORE OF THE SAME.

Palin Points:

McCain:
• The determination, resolve and sheer guts of Senator John McCain.
• Our nominee for president is a true profile in courage
• Promises to use the power of veto in defense of the public interest
• Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines, build more new-clear plants, create jobs with clean coal, and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal and other alternative sources.
• And then there is the idealism of those leaders, like John McCain, who actually do great things. They're the ones who are good for more than talk ... the ones we have always been able to count on to serve and defend America. Senator McCain's record of actual achievement and reform helps explain why so many special interests, lobbyists, and comfortable committee chairmen in Congress have fought the prospect of a McCain presidency - from the primary election of 2000 to this very day.

Obama:
• “And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves.”
• “We tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco”
• “Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems-as if we didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all.”
• It’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform- not even in the state senate.
• This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word "victory" except when he's talking about his own campaign. But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed ... when the roar of the crowd fades away ... when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot - what exactly is our opponent's plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he's done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger ... take more of your money ... give you more orders from Washington ... and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world. America needs more energy ... our opponent is against producing it.
• Victory in Iraq is finally in sight, he wants to forfeit.
• Terrorist states are seeking new-clear weapons without delay, he wants to meet them without preconditions.
• Al Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America, he’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights? Government is too big, he wants to grow it.
• Congress spends too much, he promises more.
• Taxes are too high , he wants to raise them.
• The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes ... raise payroll taxes ... raise investment income taxes ... raise the death tax ... raise business taxes ... and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars.

Joe Biden:
In his speech, he described Obama as the “American Dream.” He praised him for his determination to help American’s when he could have done anything. He states that being raised by single mom he is able to relate to people of America on the other hand McCain is not. He relates McCain with Bush. He believes that McCain is good guy but he is going to take the American in the wrong direction. He is not going to help Americans. When Obama is elected president, he will cut the taxes, create more jobs and make college more affordable. The main point of his speech for Obama was “change” and for McCain “the same”. His definition of America is: if you fall down, get back together, never give up, and “no one is better than you, everyone is equal, and everyone is equal to you”.
Sarah Palin:
She describes McCain as honorable, courageous and the man who has gone through much harder missions and knows how to win a fight. She describes Obama a man who praises the working people when they are listening and when they are not, he talks about them bitterly. Also Obama has published two memoirs but not a single law and when he talks about the war, he never uses the work “victory”. And when the victory is in sight, he wants to surrender. She states that in McCain-Palin administration, they will lay more pipelines, solar and other sources. At the end of her speech she says that “change is the goal we share.” Sarah’s definition of America is that everyone has the opportunity to make it in the U.S. and everyone contributes to society in time of need and all pull it together.
